While cupping therapy may be new to some, it has been around for thousands of years. Throughout these years, this ancient treatment has evolved and expanded across the world.
Cupping therapy eases pain, relieves muscle tension, and releasing toxins. It does so by using suction onto the skin.
During a cupping session, our physiotherapists will place the cups on the desired area of the body. This can be on your stomach, back, legs, or arms.
The physiotherapist will then use the cup to create a vacuum. The suction created from this vacuum will pull at the skin to promote healing.
This is achieved by increasing blood flow to chosen areas of the body. By increasing blood flow to targeted places, muscles and cells will be encouraged to repair.
Cups will be left on the body for 5-10 minutes. While the therapy should be fairly painless, bruising is to be expected. Bruises should fade within 10 days of treatment.
Conditions that can benefit from cupping therapy are (but are not limited to):
- Back, neck, knee, and shoulder pain
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Gastrointestinal conditions
- Migraines
- High blood pressure
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
