Staying fit whilst abroad

The holiday season is well and truly upon us which is why blog two of our summer series has been designed to give you the tools to keep fit whilst away on your travels.

For many of us, the months leading up to a holiday consist of regular exercise and a more controlled diet in preparation for a longed-for summer getaway. However, this can seem like a daunting and impossible task to uphold when you finally make it to your summer destination.

This being said, there are many ways to keep fit and healthy when surrounded by an abundance of holiday temptations…

Everything in moderation

The first thing to be aware of is the fact that you are on holiday, and it is important to enjoy yourself, relax, and unwind without feeling guilty about reducing the frequency and intensity of your usual exercise programme. It is important to remember that it is ok to consume alcohol or fattier foods in moderation… especially on your holidays!

Go by foot where you are

Walking as much as possible and resisting the urge to use public transport is a fantastic way to help maintain your fitness whilst having the ability to indulge in the local food and drink. Not only this, but it is also a great way to experience parts of the destination you would have otherwise missed if you had travelled by public transport.

Many cities offer walking tours – allowing you to see the city on foot whilst keeping your heart healthy and active!

Keep Hydrated

Ensure you make it a priority to remain hydrated throughout the day and replenish fluids that have been lost as a result of the hotter climate. Take a refillable bottle of water with you wherever you go, and you can even add a pinch of salt to help replace lost electrolytes.

Keep up your vitamin intake

It is important to maintain some level of normality when on your holiday, and this should include not wavering from your daily vitamin doses. This will reduce the risk of you falling sick whilst abroad and will help you to maintain your usual energy levels.

At SP Physiotherapy we believe in a healthy balance between fitness and pleasure.

It is important to remain fit and healthy whilst abroad, however, it is equally as important to relax and enjoy yourself as much as you can!
