Acupuncture for Head Aches and Migraines
Self Care
Almost everyone at one point in their life has suffered from headaches, and this can be caused by a number of factors, such as stress, bad posture, or simply having a common cold or flu. We understand the impact chronic headaches can have on a patient’s life which is why we want to assure our patients that there are a number of treatment options available to relieve and prevent severe headaches and Migraines. Headaches typically fall into three main categories; Tension-type, Migraine, and Cerviogenic headaches.
Tension-type Headaches
Of the three main types of headaches, Tension-type headaches are the most common and have typically affected most people at one stage in their life. During a tension-type headache, patients tend to feel mild to moderate pain on both sides of the head which can sometimes spread to the neck.
Migraine
Migraines are not as common and affect far fewer people than Tension-type headaches. However, they are far more severe and can often be debilitating to those who experience them due to blurred vision, loss of appetite, nausea, and severe pain on one side of the head and neck.
Cerviogenic Headaches
Cerviogenic Headaches are described as a chronic and reoccurring pain that typically begins in the patient’s neck and are musculoskeletal in nature. These types of headaches are caused by pain in the spine or neck that travels to the patient’s head and is often accompanied by a reduced range of motion of the neck.
Despite how common most types of headaches are, many people are still blissfully unaware of the treatment options available to help minimise and prevent reoccurring pain.
Acupuncture has been proven to be an extremely effective treatment and prevention option for several types of headaches. But how can this help?
Acupuncture involves the insertion of sterilised needles into specific parts of the body in an attempt to release tension and stimulate the production of pain-relieving endorphins. During Acupuncture treatment at SP Physiotherapy, we will utilise a range of techniques including using both local points (head and neck), and distant points (hands and feet) when placing the needles to help reduce overall pain transmission.
Patients who begin their Acupuncture journey typically feel a benefit straight away, however, for patients to feel the full benefits of the treatment, we recommend a course of sessions over a six-week period.
At SP Physiotherapy, we understand the effects of headaches and migraines on a person’s day-to-day life, but we want you to be assured that there are a number of treatment options available to minimise pain and improve your overall quality of life.
